When pigments meet facial masks and friendship blends into communication——on the evening of November 19th, the first facial mask-themed oral English salon of the semester kicked off warmly at Duxing Hall, South Building of Civil Engineering. International students from various countries and Chinese students gathered together, conversing through colors and conveying affection via language, thus launching a cross-border cultural interaction.

At the start of the event, Huafang, the hostess from Kyrgyzstan, ignited the scene with immense enthusiasm. "Welcome to the oral English salon! It's a pleasure to meet you all. Today, we'll paint facial masks and make new friends!" Her warm greetings melted the initial awkwardness of first encounters in an instant.
Subsequently, the host invited Huating, an international student from her hometown, to take the stage. Her performance of the classic Chinese song "The Moon Represents My Heart" wowed the entire audience. With her standard Mandarin pronunciation and melodious tunes, Chinese students offstage couldn't help but sing along. As voices intertwined, language barriers quietly faded away. "I never expected a foreign student to sing a Chinese song so beautifully!" The applause echoing throughout the venue was the most sincere compliment.

Next came the 10-minute group self-introduction session, where the four groups instantly turned into lively mini-classrooms. Chinese students took the initiative to ask questions: "Which country are you from?" "What do you like to do in your free time?" International students also shared openly—from the alpine grasslands of Kyrgyzstan to the Ganges scenery of Bangladesh, as well as students from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Russia and multiple Central Asian countries, all enthusiastically introduced their hometowns and hobbies. Topics extended from interests to daily life, filling the classroom with laughter and chatter. "So we all love listening to classical music!" "The traditional festivals in your country are just as lively as our Spring Festival"—shared interests quickly erased unfamiliarity, bringing the distance between desks closer and sowing the seeds of friendship quietly.
Immediately afterward, a short educational video gave everyone a quick overview of facial mask making techniques and the symbolic meanings of colors: red represents loyalty and righteousness, black symbolizes integrity, and white implies treachery. When blank facial masks, pigments, and brushes were distributed, Chinese and foreign students spontaneously formed pairs, marking the official start of a creative collaboration.
Colors collided continuously on the palettes, as the originally plain masks gradually came to life. Some groups integrated their own cultural elements, outlining contours with national flag colors; others combined the traditional symbolic meanings of facial masks to create unique patterns, with everyone pouring their ingenuity into the creation.

During the work-sharing session, the students' expressions were filled with thought and warmth. Huabo from Kyrgyzstan tried his best to introduce in Chinese: "Three of us—my classmates and the teacher—made this together. It has red, yellow, and blue." His slightly awkward expression couldn't hide the joy of collaboration. Huahao, an international student from Bangladesh, presented his "special work"—a facial mask with sharp lines and a touch of exaggeration. "Cultures of all countries are connected, but communication requires learning to shut up and listen." His interpretation plunged the scene into a brief moment of reflection, followed by enthusiastic applause. With the help of Chinese students beside him, Huadong, another international student from the same country, accurately applied the knowledge he had just learned: "I used red on the forehead to represent loyalty and righteousness; white on the cheeks to show a complex personality; and black for the patterns to symbolize integrity." The ingenuity of integrating cultural knowledge into creation won praise from Chinese students.

From collaboration details to creative concepts, and from cultural differences to shared insights, every presentation deepened the significance of cross-cultural communication. As the event drew to a close, everyone remained engrossed in discussing each other’s works, reluctant to end the interaction.
